The Automobile Industry and Cloud Computing

Past predictions come true

Toyota and Microsoft Team on Azure
We found a recent news item that automobile maker Toyota is going to team up with the Microsoft Azure Cloud Platform to deliver various services related to automobile building activities.

Microsoft and Toyota are supposed to stick $12 million in Toyota Media Services to develop diagnostic and GPS data for cars, developing a whole global cloud platform for "telematics" by 2015. Toyota means to open the platform to other carmakers.

Past Predictions Come True on Automobile Industry Cloud
Growing enterprise adoption of Cloud Platform is good news, especially for the automobile industry which is at a crossroads and trying to become profitable again. This will be a very good choice. Soon other OEMs will be taking similar measures.

I have, in an earlier article, detailed about how Cloud to Cloud Federation (as planned by Toyota), will be a key value proposition for providing the telematics especially in an Automatic Crash Notification. In this article, I have detailed how the Cloud to Cloud federation can help to save the lives faster, while helping the OEMs to collaborate in this space using a Community Cloud.

I have also detailed in my earlier articles, how Just-in-Time Purchasing, Lean Manufacturing, Kanban principles, which are key to the survival of the automobile industry, served well with the Cloud. Because the automobile industry as such is quite vulnerable to sudden changes in demand and their supporting IT platform should be dynamically scalable up or down. We have seen the shutdown of major automobile manufacturers due to the impact of the recent sad natural disaster.

More in Store for the Automobile Industry in the Cloud
We see the dynamic scalability, inter-cloud collaboration, compliance, supplier OEM collaboration as some of key areas for automobile industries to move to cloud.

But beyond cost factors, we also see the industry benefiting from the new computing concepts like High Performance Computing on Cloud, which can provide the much-needed ability for the auto industry to meet to the current needs of the global market and break the barriers.
